September 15-22, 2012- Our Beach Trip

As we were preparing to leave for the beach and making our lists, Rainbow Girl requested that we bring our chalkboard, all our homeschooling books and our nature table. Since the chalkboard is painted on the wall, that was not easily doable, but I brought small dry erase boards and that worked for her. I did bring our curriculum, which we worked on when the time arrose. I did not bring our nature table, but we collected many things to add to it while on our island adventure!

Our favorite vacation place is the Outer Banks- more specifically- the towns of Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo. This year, we stayed in Rodanthe in a beautiful house one lot back from the beach. Most towns have one to two dunes between the houses and the ocean. Most of Rodanthe has no dune to speak of, which was very nice for walking to the beach with the kids. (Likely not nice during hurricanes!)

We played in the ocean, with the sand, in the pool, in the hot tub and with arts and crafts. We fished. We rode on a ferry. (With rough seas on the way there and getting stuck on a sand bar on the way back!) We adventured in Ocracoke. We thrift shopped. We flew kites. We snuggled. We watched sunrises and sunsets. We drank wine. (My mom and I that is.) It was a wonderful vacation, and I can't wait until next year!
At the Market.

Our delicious picnic lunch.

Our lovely picnic!

I CAN hear the ocean!!
In our curriculum this week was the plan to collect things on a nature walk and observe and sort the collected items based on color, size, shape, etcetera. We are always collecting things and doing this, but because we were at the beach, it did make this project different! We collected many shells, observed and sorted them, and then painted them and tried to make prints with them.

And then it was hand painting time.

Drawing beach pictures (the surrounding pictures were art by Sugar Bear)

Making Jewelry!

Watching the Wizard of Oz.

Checking out the tracks made by the "Mighty Machine!"

Large scale water play.
