November 2013

October started off with a trip to Ashland for their annual Train Day. Sadly, most of the children's activities had very long lines, and we are not fans of the over twenty minute wait. Sugar Bear had a very fun time walking along the rails and then stabbing the soil with a broken railroad tie he found.

A few days later, after our morning veggie deliveries, we went to the park with some friends to enjoy the delightful weather together.

When holidays come along, I am so glad that we are part of such an active co op- and that it is now located on such a fantastic farm. For Martinmas, we all gathered on the farm for a pot luck feast, to decorate cans and jars for our lanterns, a craft swap, and a magical lantern walk in the dark. I am so thankful to have met these families.

Remember when I was given the honor of witnessing a the birth of a beautiful baby boy? HE'S ONE!!!! How is that even possible?

Rainbow Girl has a collection of books called Getting to Know Nature's Children. Sometimes she pays no attention to them, and sometimes she reads four of them in one night. (They are big books, 50ish pages full of facts.)

Following a night of animal research, I was informed that Rainbow Girl just LOVES River Otters. After watching many, many videos of them on YouTube, a friend reminded me that a local park, Maymont, has river otters! We planned a visit the following week and the kids loved them. Many giggles were had.

Just a few days after Maymont, we went to another local park, Three Lakes State Park, to visit their playground and nature center. They had a great climbing wall on which Sugar Bear was perched for the majority of our visit. In their nature center, they had birds, turtles, fish, and a very neat dinosaur exhibit.

On Girl Scout night, we met at our local SPCA. In conjunction with the journey we are earning, the girls organized a collection for items that the SPCA was in need of and they invited us to come in for a tour. They had us gather in a meeting room where they talked for a while about what they do to help animals and what the girls can do to take care of their pets. After that, we went and looked at all of the dogs and cats that they are currently housing. It was a great experience!

We celebrated Thanksgiving over two days with two different sides of the family. On the first occasion, we gathered with daddy's side of the family, including Great Grandma and Great Grandpa in town from Canada! On second Thanksgiving, we celebrated with my Dad's side of the family.

My brother, his girlfriend and I are all vegan, so we planned ahead and brought a feast for ourselves. (and for sharing!)
